Some statistics after the Palio of August 18, 2026

After the Palio, it is invariably time to weigh up a few things regarding the history of the Palio. This time is no different. Here is a brief overview that we compiled after some research in the PalioApp.

• Tittia is the first jockey in the history of the Palio to achieve 4 personal cappotti (2 victories in one year). He also won 6 of the last 10 Palios run.
• With his 13th victory, Tittia is on par with Trecciolino and Picino (better documented after 1900), but from a more distant past, also Bachicche, Dorino and Paolaccino. He is just one victory away from the ‘contemporary’ record of Aceto, who won 14. Ciano and Pavolino also won 14. Bastiancino and Gobbo Saragiolo even won 15 (but regarding the last four mentioned, we are talking about the 18th and 19th centuries, and therefore less accurate documentation).
• After the victories of Aquila and Nicchio this year, Chiocciola is the new ‘nonna’ (longest without winning).
• Since 1794, it is the second time in history that the cuffia has changed contradas twice in a single year: from Aquila to Nicchio and subsequently from Nicchio to Chiocciola. It must be noted, however, that people only began speaking of ‘nonna’ and ‘cuffia’ in the previous century.
• Chiocciola is the only contrada that has not been won in the 21st century. The last time was on August 16, 1999 (Massino at Votta Votta).
