Aquila, Onda, and Giraffa drawn for the Palio of August 16, 2026.

Aquila, Onda, and Giraffa are the three Contrade drawn this evening, Sunday, July 5, at the City Hall on Piazza del Campo in Siena. These three Contrade, along with the seven automatically participating Contrade: Selva, Chiocciola, Oca, Nicchio, Lupa, Istrice, and Torre, will participate in the Palio on August 16, 2026, which is held in honor of the Madonna dell’Assunta.

The draw took place in the Sala degli Arazzi of the City Hall in the presence of the Mayor of Siena, Nicoletta Fabio, who presided over the meeting, and the leaders of the seventeen Contrade of Siena. Chiocciola drew Aquila, Lupa drew Onda, and Torre drew Giraffa.

From the three-pane windows on the first floor of the Palazzo Pubblico, overlooking Piazza del Campo, the three flags of the drawn Contrade were displayed in order, along with the seven flags that automatically participate in the Palio. We see three rivals in the Piazza del Campo: Lupa and Istrice, Oca and Torre, and finally Onda and Torre.

The flags of the seven other Contrade that are not participating in the Palio di Siena on August 16, 2026, were subsequently displayed on the second floor of the Palazzo Pubblico. These Contrade will automatically participate in the Palio on August 16, 2027.

At the end of the operation, the ten leaders of the Contrade participating in the Palio on August 16, 2026, in accordance with Article 30 of the aforementioned regulations, communicated their proposal to the municipal administration, represented by Mayor Fabio, to reappoint Renato Bircolotti as Mossiere. According to Article 31 of the “Palio Regulations,” the appointment rests with the municipal administration itself.
